About the Painting
An original, one-of-a-kind painting from my Chasing Light Across Horizons series, 2026.
My work is centred on translating feelings of awe and wonder into colour, movement and form.
‘Quietly Rising’ is a richly textured, semi-abstract cloudscape inspired by a dramatic Kapiti Coast sunset, viewed from a hilltop looking down towards the ocean.
Shifting clouds begin to part, revealing the returning blue sky high above. Warm sunset light illuminates their edges, with subtle reflections appearing across the water below.
Created through expressive impasto layers of acrylic and marble dust using a range of palette knives, the painting blends structured abstraction with the emotional realism of nature’s shifting skies.
The composition grew from the same exploration of light and atmosphere as my Wellington Regional Gold Award-winning painting, ‘Shine Through’, developed here on a larger scale and in a square format.
